Teach Your Students to Improvise!
Improvisation isn't just for jazz bands. The open and free exploration of our own creative, musical voice (and the connections between young musicians that arise as a result) is available in any ensemble or private lesson situation. Concert bands, choirs, general music classrooms, private lesson studios, and jazz bands too - improvisation is a powerful force for learning in each of these arenas.
For it's own sake, improvisation is awesome creative expression. Kids unleash their authentic, true creative-selves. It's deep and meaningful, and it's extremely fun!
Improvisation is a tremendous foundation for all of the elements of music we strive to teach young people. There is no better way that I know of to teach listening skills, ear training, scales, balance and blend, steady-beat, melody, harmony, form, and intonation. Kids experience each of these personally and deeply, mastering each one as they progress.
